Eager to follow in the footsteps of his countrymen Benny Lynch, Ken Buchanan, and Jim Watt, Scotland’s Craig McEwan has his sights set on a world championship, and with an impressive professional record of 17-0 with 9 knockouts, he is well on his way to that goal.
A native of Edinburgh, the 27-year-old McEwan began boxing at the age of seven, and over the course of a storied amateur career consisting of an amazing 376 fights, he won ten gold medals in international tournaments and was a regular captain of the Scottish International Team. He also won numerous championships on the junior and senior level, and in 2005 he broke a domestic amateur record by winning three international gold medals.
With nothing left to prove on the amateur level, McEwan relocated to the United States, signed with the renowned Golden Boy Promotions, and made his professional debut at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada on September 16, 2006, stopping Nick Montalvo in just one round.
Nine consecutive wins have followed for the exciting southpaw (five by knockout) and after a 2007 campaign that saw him fight six times, he got 2008 off to an equally strong start in February when he scored a near shutout eight round decision over Erik Rafael Esquivel.
On July 4th of last year, McEwan returned to action against Juan Sanchez, making short work of his foe by stopping him in just three rounds, and on September 27th, he notched win number 12 as he scored a shutout decision win over Hilario Lopez.
But it was his 2009 debut on February 19th that got fight fans and insiders buzzing, as he halted well-regarded fellow prospect Ivan Stovall in seven rounds. That victory set the stage for two more stellar wins, as he knocked out Alexis Divison in the first round on April 11th, and decisioned ‘The Contender’s Brian Vera over ten rounds on May 8th.
On June 27th, McEwan kept his busy 2009 schedule going with an eight round decision win over always tough Darnell Boone at Los Angeles’ STAPLES Center, and on November 28th, he traveled to Quebec City to hand unbeaten James Parison his first professional loss via an eight round unanimous decision.
