Fighter Biography

Buenos Aires’ Marcelino Nicolas Lopez has come a long way his nearly nine years as a professional boxer, winning 31 of his 33 bouts and earning a reputation as a fighter to watch in the super lightweight division.

But it hasn’t been an easy road for the talented 135-pounder, as he’s fought quality competition all along his journey through the notoriously tough Argentinean fight circuit.

A professional since December 15, 2006, when he earned a unanimous decision win over Juan Manuel Flores, Lopez fought mainly around his home town of Buenos Aires in his formative years, quickly running off a 10-0 record with four knockouts.

In June of 2008, he took his first major step up with a second round knockout of 45 fight veteran Ricardo Chamorro, making a statement that he was about to begin his assault on the top fighters at 135 pounds. Five more victories followed before he defeated his toughest test to date, 35-8-1 contender Javier Alvarez, in quick fashion, stopping him in just two rounds on November 21, 2009.

That victory propelled him into a May 28, 2010 bout against Alberto Leopoldo Santillan for the vacant WBC Latino title, and again, when the pressure was on, Lopez delivered, as he pounded out a hard-fought majority decision win to earn his first professional crown.

Lopez went on to win six more WBC Latino title fights while adding the Argentina (FAB) title to his list of accomplishments. And though he lost for the first time via close decision to Pablo Martin Barboza in July of 2014, he bounced back immediately with back-to-back knockouts of Diego Martin Aguilera and Sergio Javier Escobar in his new weight class at 140 pounds.

Now ready to begin his move toward a world title, the 29-year-old Lopez will make his United States debut on October 3 with a bout at the StubHub Center in Carson, California against an opponent to be named.
