Diaz Decisions Jauregui, Gonzalez KO's Montiel on "Boxeo De Oro"

In the main event of Thursday's edition of HBO Latino's "Oscar De La Hoya Presents Boxeo De Oro", which was held at the San Diego Sports Arena, Julio Diaz won the IBF lightweight championship with a majority 12 round decision over Javier Jauregui.

Scores were 118-110 twice and 117-117 for Diaz, who improves to 30-2 with 22 knockouts. Jauregui's record falls to 47-11-2 with 34 KOs .

Using a disciplined boxing attack, Diaz was able to keep the hard charging Jauregui at bay with his jabs and whipping hooks, and did not allow himself to get caught up in a brawl. For his part, Jauregui showed the heart of a champion as he kept the pressure on "The Kidd" all night, but was unable to land the big punch that would have turned the tide of the fight.

There were no knockdowns in the fight, and though both men showed the scars of battle on their faces, neither was in serious danger of being knocked out at any time. That didn't stop the crowd from showing their appreciation for the fighters throughout the bout as Diaz and Jauregui fought at a level worthy of a world championship bout.

In the "Boxeo De Oro" co-feature, Jhonny Gonzalez continued to impress as he won the NABO bantamweight championship with a sixth round stoppage of a courageous Alejandro Felix Montiel. Gonzalez (23-4, 21 KOs) scored three knockdowns of Montiel (47-7, 27 KOs ) before referee David Mendoza halted the contest at the 21-second mark of round six.
