A “Grande
Fight Night at The Tank” Roars
into San Jose on August 21
Top Prospect Jose Navarro Headlines
“Boxeo De Oro” Show Against
Former World Champion Adonis Rivas
LOS ANGELES, July XX – Known throughout
California for competitive fights and
packed houses, the “Fight Night
at The Tank” series has gained
a reputation for being one of the best
nights out in boxing.
On August 21, Golden Boy Promotions
is pleased to bring a “Grande
Fight Night at The Tank” to the
nation via HBO Latino’s hit series,
“Oscar De La Hoya Presents Boxeo
De Oro”, which will be telecast
from the HP Pavilion in San Jose, California
beginning at 10pm ET / PT.
Headlining this show, which caps off
an action-packed night of boxing, will
be unbeaten super flyweight star Jose
Navarro, who will defend his NABO title
against Adonis Rivas in a 12 round championship
bout.
Doors open at XXX. First bout is at
XXX.
A former United States Olympian, Navarro
is one of only a handful of fighters
from the 2000 games to still hold an
undefeated record. But even though his
slate is perfect at 17-0 with 7 KOs,
Navarro’s competition has been
anything but light so far. Already the
proud owner of the NABO and IBA Continental
titles, “El Angellino” is
coming off his first victory over the
12 round distance, a gritty but clearcut
decision win over Jorge Luis Gonzalez
on April’s telecast of “Boxeo
De Oro”. The 22-year-old is currently
ranked fifth in the world by the WBO
and seventh by the WBA.
Standing in Navarro’s way to the
top is a former two-time world champion
who has his eyes set on the upset.
30-year-old Adonis Rivas (19-3-1, 10
KOs) is part of a new wave of Nicaraguan
fighters (alone with welterweight champion
Ricardo Mayorga) who are taking the
boxing world by storm. Winning the WBO
super flyweight title with a 12 round
unanimous decision over Diego Morales
in just his 18th fight, Rivas made two
defenses and then moved down to flyweight,
where he won the interim WBO title by
defeating Jair Jimenez in May of 2002.
He lost a tough decision to Omar Narvaez
in his next fight, but with the world
watching, August 21 is no better time
for Rivas to get back in the title mix.
In the nationally televised co-feature,
welterweights Joe Hutchinson and Hector
Quiroz clash in an intriguing 10 round
crossroads match that could determine
a future world title challenger.
“Lil Joe” Hutchinson (28-4-2,
13 KOs) is a seasoned veteran who has
taken on some of the best fighters in
the world in his eight-year career.
Fighting mainly in the Midwest early
in his career, Hutchinson, an Indianapolis
native, made a name for himself on the
world scene with his spirited efforts
in close decision losses to Arturo Gatti
and Hector Camacho Jr. Currently riding
a four fight winning streak, Hutchinson
is coming off an exciting decision win
over Fernando Mena on July 8 in a bout
which headlined ESPN2’s “Tuesday
Night Fights”.
And though Hutchinson is on a hot streak,
he will have his work cut out for him
against the pride of Sonora, Mexico,
28-year-old Hector Quiroz (37-7-1, 30
KOs).
A crowd-pleasing brawler with an iron
will and fists to match, “El Canonero”
is on a bit of a tear himself, with
three consecutive knockout wins to his
credit. In his last bout on May 2, Quiroz,
a former NABO champion and world title
challenger, avenged an earlier defeat
when he emphatically stopped world-class
contender Antonio Diaz in nine brutal
rounds.
In true “Fight Night at The Tank”
fashion, a high-quality slate of undercard
bouts will be on tap, with matchups
to be announced shortly.
