HBO LATINO AND OSCAR DE LA HOYA ANNOUNCE
EXTENSION OF THURSDAY NIGHT BOXING SERIES.
OSCAR DE LA HOYA PRESENTA BOXEO DE ORO,
WILL CONTINUE TO AIR IN 2004, EXCLUSIVELY
ON HBO LATINO
NEW YORK, June
4, 2003 -- Widely recognized
for its leadership position around the
world in televised professional boxing,
HBO Sports extended its boxing franchise
in 2003 as HBO Latino, the cable network’s
24-hour Spanish-language channel, introduced
a groundbreaking association with world
super welterweight/junior middleweight
champion Oscar De La Hoya for OSCAR
DE LA HOYA PRESENTA BOXEO DE ORO. After
the first five editions of this hard-hitting
series, HBO and De La Hoya announced
today that the monthly series, which
premieres exclusively on Thursday nights
on HBO Latino, will return with a full
complement of dates in 2004.
“We’re delighted to announce
that OSCAR DE LA HOYA PRESENTA BOXEO
DE ORO has been renewed for 2004 on
HBO Latino,” said Ross Greenburg,
President of HBO Sports. “Often
times in boxing, you have to make hard,
difficult decisions. This was not one
of those times. We are excited to work
with Golden Boy Promotions on this successful
series.”
“I am thrilled that HBO Sports
and HBO Latino decided to exercise its
second year option after only five shows,”
said De La Hoya. “This proves
that the association between HBO and
Golden Boy Promotions is successful
for both parties and most importantly
was able to capture the interest of
boxing and sports fans from around the
globe. I want to thank HBO for its continued
support of the sport and the opportunity
these shows provide for young and upcoming
fighters to shine.”
“This series is the first dedicated
original program created for HBO Latino
and we are thrilled with its performance,”
said Bernadette Aulestia, vice president
of marketing for HBO. “The identification
and association that HBO Latino generates
with OSCAR DE LA HOYA PRESENTA BOXEO
DE ORO is terrific and this series helps
fulfill our promise to continually enhance
the value of the service to our ever-growing
audience of Hispanic viewers nationwide.”
The series, which features up-and-coming
fighters on a monthly basis, is promoted
by Golden Boy Promotions. The series
has traveled to San Antonio, El Paso
and Miami since its debut in Los Angeles
last January. Visits to Chicago and
New York are planned before the end
of the year.
De La Hoya, one of boxing’s most
recognizable stars, has won world titles
in five weight classes, and is returning
to the ring on Sept. 13 in Las Vegas
versus rival Shane Mosley on HBO Pay-Per-View.
He is president of Golden Boy Promotions
Inc., a California-based promotional
company that has signed a stable of
promising young fighters who have the
opportunity to work and grow under De
La Hoya’s guidance.
Oscar De La Hoya, 30, was a gold medal-winner
at the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games.
He has had a TV association with HBO
since 1993, appearing 24 times on the
“Network of Champions.”
HBO Latino, currently available in 45%
of HBO’s cable households, is
a dedicated
Spanish-language channel designed to
reflect the diversity of Latino culture
in the country. HBO Latino features
U.S. premieres of Spanish-language movies
and documentaries; music videos; original
short-form programming that spotlights
entertainment and cultural issues; plus
a mix of popular Hollywood films and
the best of HBO’s originals. Along
with the new series “Oscar De
La Hoya Presenta Boxeo de Oro,”
boxing coverage on HBO Latino includes
HBO’s flagship “World Championship
Boxing” series, with live ringside
Spanish commentary, and the critically
acclaimed “HBO Boxing After Dark.”
The channel is part of the HBO/MAX Pack,
the network’s multiplex line-up.
