Oscar de la Hoya Meets With Family Of Fallen U.S. Army Soldier Killed in Iraq Who Was Honored At April 28, 2011 Fight Night Club Event

On April 28, 2011, Oscar de la Hoya and Golden Boy Promotions had some very special guests attend their Fight Night Club Event. It was the family of U.S. Army Specialist Jose Torre Jr.
During De La Hoya’s March 2011 USO Tour, one of the stops was to visit the U.S. Army 1st Battalion 7th Field Artillery stationed in Baghdad, Iraq. The unit’s commanding officer informed De La Hoya that one of his solders was killed in combat earlier in the year and his family was from Southern California. Without hesitation, Oscar informed the commanding officer that once he returned to the home, he would contact the family in order to express his condolences personally.
A man of his word, De La Hoya did that and much more. He met with the family of Specialist Jose Torre Jr. met at the Golden Boy Offices in downtown Los Angeles for some one on one time during which De La Hoya signed gloves, took pictures and expressed his condolences to the family.
After the meeting, the family was treated to dinner at a restaurant at LA Live and given VIP seating at that night’s Fight Night Club event at Club Nokia where over 1,700 boxing fans were asked to stand and hear the ring announcer pay tribute to Army Specialist Torres:
Ladies and gentlemen…your attention please…
In attendance at tonight’s Fight Night Club event is the family of Army Specialist Jose Torre Jr. from Garden Grove, California. Jose Torre Jr. was born on June 16, 1989 in Orange County, California and died at the age of 21 on January 15, 2011 in Baghdad, Iraq while protecting the freedom of this great nation.
We ask that you please rise in a moment of silence as we toll a memorial ten count in honor of Army Specialist Jose Torre Jr. and all those who have given their lives while protecting the freedom of Americans around the world.
The Torres family was deeply moved and thankful their son’s ultimate sacrifice was recognized and had not been forgotten.
